Love is Art ♾ Art is Love

Each of us is on a journey – a journey of the soul. Our soul speaks to us when we stop talking and thinking, simply when we are.

Zana Tablo

I am a Kurdish artist. I live in Germany, but my roots are in Mesopotamia, where the Euphrates and Tigris created fertile land. On the one hand, my art is a reflection of Kurdish society with its diversity of religions and worldviews. The focus is often on the woman, who has an ambivalent role within the multi-religious culture – sometimes as a sacrificial mother, sometimes as an emancipated woman, who fights for her rights and freedom. On the other hand, my art is also influenced by the culture of the Occident. My philosophy studies and the constant confrontation with the concept of psychē (ancient Greek ψυχή/soul) can also be found in each of my works.

I dealt with art theoretically early on, whether through intensive study of composition, color theory and art history or through copying famous artists, whereby any painting attempts based on theoretical knowledge always failed. The personal turning point in 2020 led to the wondrous flow of creativity. Zana has changed – the difference was that now I am painting with my soul (psychē) instead of my mind. The first work came about when I found an old acrylic tube in shimmery blue. With nothing in mind, I slid the brush across the watercolor paper and without thinking, I drew a dervish dancing in a trance.

Kurdish Woman

Jin, Jiyan, Azadî.
Woman, Life, Freedom

The Kurdish woman has a special role within the multi-religious, multilingual and multicultural Kurdish society. Sometimes she is the self-sacrificing woman who sacrifices herself to her fate as mother, wife, daughter, daughter-in-law, as if in a deep sleep. This woman has not learned to feel herself, to see herself and to dream for herself. In addition to this woman, there is also the woman who stands up for her rights as a woman. This woman has reflected on her importance and her role and has risen in a struggle for her freedom and for her rights. Both women’s models are two opposite poles. Neither of them lives out their natural role as a woman, one is in a trance-like sleep, the other has consciously entered into a constant struggle – neither of the two women lives out their true role as a woman – neither is just.

Mezopotamia is everywhere!

Mesopotamia is everywhere is a play on words. Due to the division of Kurdistan and the centuries-long genocide against the Kurds, Kurds have been fleeing to other countries for over 100 years. As a result, Kurds can now be found all over the world: in Russia (Kurdistane Sor), the USA, the European Union, Japan, and so on. Wherever Kurds are, they try to keep their culture alive. In addition to the genocide by the occupying states, the Kurdish population is being assimilated through the banning of the Kurdish language, identity, music, names, traditional clothing, and flags. Sadly, in many cases, this has been successful, with Kurds identifying with their occupying powers. The assimilation has mainly been achieved through the repressive measures of the occupying states, such as decades of imprisonment without trial, physical violence, structural oppression like a lack of job prospects, and structural weakening (lack of electricity and water)..

Dêq or Daq (Tattoo)

“Dêq” or “Daq” are traditional kurdish tattoos whose true origin has not been adequately researched yet. People all over the world have been tattooing themselves since primeval times, even before the written language. The symbols of Dêq are based on the real life, flora and fauna as well as nature.symbols that are based on the reality of life, flora and fauna as well as nature. In Mesopotamia there are mostly women who immortalize their own history on their skin through the Dêq. Sometimes the Dêq functions as a protection against evil, such as Nazar, to increase fertility, to heal ailments and diseases, to visualize strokes of fate, and much more. Kurds of all religions can be tattooed, even if Islamization tried to dismiss this as haram (unclean).

What is special about the Dêq next to the symbolism, it is  manufacture.
Because this requires the breast milk of a woman who has given birth to a daughter.
My grandma and many of my aunts had these Dêq. If you ask a Dêq wearing Woman what the Dêq means, her soul diary will open. I try to capture these stories in my art. They are true stories and true symbols, but the women are fictitious, their stories are fascinating.

Whirling Dervish

Do not feel lonely, the entire universe is inside you. Stop acting so small. You are the universe in ecstatic motion.“
Rumi

The Dance of the Dervishes signifies the mystical union of the Sufi (follower of Sufism) with the Universe/God/Allah.  The ecstatic trance dance is practiced to get in touch with God/Allah.
During the sema ritual, the dervish wears a felt hat (sikke) made of camel hair, which symbolizes the tombstone of the ego, the black cloak that he removes in front of the sema symbolizes the grave, and the white robe (tenure) symbolizes the shroud.  By putting back of the black cloak, the Dervish is spiritually reborn.

Faith and emanation

Faith and emanation, alongside my Kurdish identity, are central themes in my philosophical exploration and creative work. Faith and belief systems have shaped me from an early age. As a Kurd, I live amidst various religions (Yazidism, Judaism, Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Islam, etc.). During my philosophy studies, I was able to focus theoretically on the origins of religions and belief systems, but since 2020, I have been on the path of emanation in the sense of Plotinus. This outward search has ended within and in everything.

Soul-Wanderer

Each of us is on a journey – a journey of the soul. Our soul speaks to us when we stop talking and thinking, simply when we are..

We are to take the Soul now in its loftier phase, not as an emanation, merely, but as eternally a member of the Supreme, even though in part it operates, also, elsewhere.
