Kurdish Contemporary (Woman) Artist

I am a Kurdish artist. I live in Germany, but my roots are in Mesopotamia, where the Euphrates and Tigris created fertile land. On the one hand, my art is a reflection of Kurdish society with its diversity of religions and worldviews. The focus is often on the woman, who has an ambivalent role within the multi-religious culture – sometimes as a sacrificial mother, sometimes as an emancipated woman, who fights for her rights and freedom. On the other hand, my art is also influenced by the culture of the Occident. My philosophy studies and the constant confrontation with the concept of psychē (ancient Greek ψυχή/soul) can also be found in each of my works.

I dealt with art theoretically early on, whether through intensive study of composition, color theory and art history or through copying famous artists, whereby any painting attempts based on theoretical knowledge always failed. The personal turning point in 2020 led to the wondrous flow of creativity. Zana has changed – the difference was that now I am painting with my soul (psychē) instead of my mind. The first work came about when I found an old acrylic tube in shimmery blue. With nothing in mind, I slid the brush across the watercolor paper and without thinking, I drew a dervish dancing in a trance.

Kurdish Woman

The Kurdish woman has a special role within the multi-religious, multilingual and multicultural Kurdish society. Sometimes she is the self-sacrificing woman who sacrifices herself to her fate as mother, wife, daughter, daughter-in-law, as if in a deep sleep. This woman has not learned to feel herself, to see herself and to dream for herself. In addition to this woman, there is also the woman who stands up for her rights as a woman. This woman has reflected on her importance and her role and has risen in a struggle for her freedom and for her rights. Both women’s models are two opposite poles. Neither of them lives out their natural role as a woman, one is in a trance-like sleep, the other has consciously entered into a constant struggle – neither of the two women lives out their true role as a woman – neither is just.

Undoubtedly we have no questions to ask which are unanswerable. We must trust the perfection of the creation so far, as to believe that whatever curiosity the order of things has awakened in our minds, the order of things can satisfy. Every man’s condition is a solution in hieroglyphic to those inquiries he would put.

Positive growth.

Nature, in the common sense, refers to essences unchanged by man; space, the air, the river, the leaf. Art is applied to the mixture of his will with the same things, as in a house, a canal, a statue, a picture.

But his operations taken together are so insignificant, a little chipping, baking, patching, and washing, that in an impression so grand as that of the world on the human mind, they do not vary the result.
